In addition to jockey, George Woolf, Seabiscuit carried the hopes and dreams of a wounded and battered nation on his back. In nationally broadcast match races such as this, the Biscuit led the way as America gradually emerged from the privation and despair that was the Great Depression. For that, as much as for his victory over War Admiral in the “Match of the Century,” Seabiscuit was named “Horse of the Year” for 1938.
