With one swift move of the hand at the big switchboard at “Wonderland” last night, Mayor Charles F. O’Neall of San Diego opened the big playground at Ocean Beach just as the clock struck seven.  The blaze of light that followed was a startler to the crowds that were waiting outside the closed gates clamoring for admittance.   –San Diego Union, July 3, 1913.

One night a cross was burned in the wash at the head of Del Monte Street, and this may have been connected with the talk about keeping the Negroes out.  We’d heard a rumor that one was going to move in, but that “we” would never stand for it . . .

Caught in a terrific tide-rip which swept upon them without warning yesterday afternoon at Ocean Beach, scores of bathers fought for their lives, sixty were rescued by life guards and other bathers, two of them were drowned and their bodies recovered, and at least eleven others are missing. . .
